HorseCat
Anything a cat can do, a Horse can do badly.

From the genius mind of Stephen Scott-Hayward (Le Cheval 2.1, Oedipus and La Descente) comes HorseCat.

Originally commissioned to write the music, beneath the bed have now taken on the role of producers for these short 1 minute animations with a view to developing a childrens TV series.

The style and character was realised by Wonky, a content creation company specialising in high-end 2D & 3D animation and illustration.

Violet
Six-part drama for Fast Eddie Films, London

Staring Jamie Glover (Waterloo Road) and Amy Phillips (Child star of Grange Hill and latterly of Rescue Me, Harbour Lights).

This orchestral score for oboe and cor anglais portrays the tender and sorrowful feel for the characters in the process of separating and also as a generic theme to be played by the heroine, a soloist in an orchestra.
This clip is a flash-back to when the couple first meet and a chance to see Amy getting her kit off.

Dismantling The Bubble
A Gauntlet & Son production

This surreal take on the nature of relationships required the music and sound design to be subtle, evocative and a little bit funny.

Industrial Love Dwarf 7
Rong Productions

Shot in a day and edited in three, my role as sound recordist enabled me to penetrate the Directors' bizarre minds in order to establish a theme for this surreal comedy from the newly formed collaboration between the 2005 BBC Talent Award Winning 2point1 and Rubberductions teams.

Four Blokes in a Room
2point1 productions

A gangster short in which the music portrays the gritty yet slick urban antics of a job gone bad. From modern groove to Dragnet-style orchestration the music emphasizes the chaotic and the comical with charming effect.

Empire Re-presenetd
This unique project, initiated by the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum's Education department, allowed four artists to dig into the Museum's exceptional archives from India and Africa to make three short films.

"Nathan Ng's music and witty lyrics to footage of holidaymakers on the Gambian coast from 1965 to the 70's is gently provocative and thoroughly entertaining".

Joy of 8mm
Harvest Films

Providing sound design support by way of sponsorship in kind for this event which has been hosted at both Watershed and Tobacco Factory, Bristol. Working closely with several directors to produce soundtracks for use as live synchronized sound. This is made particularly challenging as the films are made sequentially, cut-in-camera and not seen until the screening events. www.joyof8.org

Pillock
2point1 productions

Following the directors' multi-award winning debut short Le Cheval 2.1, Pillock is introduced by a dynamically huge cinematic entrance onto a tiny title. The music continues in this vein so as to mislead the audience into thinking the film is one thing when it is actually something completely different.

Professional
Noname Productions

The sound of a squeaking balloon punctuates the nervous tension as a mother awaits the piercing of her daughter's belly button. Hammer-style horror orchestration brings this Hellraiser short to a bloody climax.

Battered
Dir. Paul Coombes

Using a whistled theme with acoustic guitar and banjo accompaniment, the scene is set for a father and son fishing trip. The introduction of squealing guitars and manic Drum 'n' Bass powerfully brings this Deliverance-style movie to an unexpected climax.

Where could it be?
2point1 productions

A quirky and comical combination of oboe, clarinet, double bass and vibes accompanies and old lady ransacking a house in search of something shiny. Once found, the film has a sinister twist.

Good Morning
Red Van Films

Radio 4 pips and other wireless sound-bites provide the foundation for the orchestral score accompanying a decorator, whose life is slowly draining away from him as he repeatedly rollers a white-washed wall.

Text and the City
Film29. Joy of 8 Challenge, Harvest Films, Bristol
Using a vague Shooting script and my memory of the days filming, a tense and manically urban score was developed to accompany this 'edited-in-camera' silent film. Manipulated Wildtrack (e.g. gum-chewing, shuffling chairs and barking dogs) recorded during the shoot, punctuate and form the basis of a Latin rhythm, which drives a Sex In The City-style piano riff.

Click
Fast Eddie Films, London
A relentless minimalist refrain using piano, double bass and low woodwind typifies the sense that one is not alone in a presumed empty house.

Uncontrollable Hamsters
Animation for Fictitious Egg, Bristol
Mellow jazz guitar and soulful saxophone accompany this hamster romp from caged pets to up-beat drums, bass and guitar-fuelled capers into a world of Mad Max madness.

A Quiet Night In
Illusion Films
Abstracted atonal sounds enhance the protagonists relinquishing grip on reality. Multi-tracked bass drums pound slightly out of time whilst discordant strings squeal and slide as he is overtaken by envy and shame leading to a climactic thwarted sexual assault.

Rooftop
Fast Eddie Films, London
An adagio for piano, woodwind and plucked strings brings this characterful gangster flick to a climax. Manipulated sounds from the hum of outside extractor fans and low resonance from bowed basses with reversed piano stabs punctuates the revealing plot. Spaghetti western-style strummed Spanish guitar highlights the crucial twists.

Volte Face
Fast Eddie Films, London
This very funny tale of writers-block lent itself to a series of pastiche soundtracks, which enhanced the hackneyed writing of several unfinished scenes until the ultimate reversal of fortune.

Alien, Control Freak
Dir: Lucy Phillips
Samples of conversations on the nature of control were recorded and played back randomly to form a collage of sound.

Stairway
Tallgeezer Productions
Heavily atmospheric generic themes using a child's musical box and ascending atonal sounds were composed to clarify and guide the narrative through a life-story in flashback. Winner of the Golden Boot Award at the Portobello Film Festival.
