Understanding Slavery Website
National Maritime Museum.

www.understandingslavery.com is a new, free, web-based resource designed to give teachers and educators a tool kit for teaching the history of the transatlantic slave trade from multiple perspectived and through museum collections.

Acting as consultant to Dr Katherine Hann, my role included in-depth research into the importance of music in African culture Pre-Slavery and how it remained the source of strength and identity for those enslaved during the period of the transatlantic slave trade. This research documents the unpresidented influence that music had upon all societies caught up in the trade and its subsequent role in developing popular music culture today. In addition my recording and editing skills were used to produce all sound files featured on the site.

My commission included research into the history of African-American music and its influence in current popular trends. This workshop model will be available with audio and visual references for school parties to learn the roots of today's popular music culture.
